HTC announces the successor to the original TyTN — the HTC TyTN II
The mobile phone market is very hot right now with the launch of the Apple iPhone and the LG Prada phones. Even with those two touch screen phones, many still consider HTC to be the maker of some of the nicest phones around.
The HTC TyTN, rebadged in the US as the Cingular 8525, is certainly a better phone for typing with its QWERTY thumb pad than the iPhone with its onscreen keyboard. To improve things even further HTC has a replacement in the wings for the TyTN — the TyTN II.
The new TyTN II is guaranteed to work anywhere in the world, according to HTC. It supports 3.5G HSDPA that is nine times faster than standard 3G service. One of the main differences between the TyTN II and the original TyTN is the 2.8-inch 240 x 320 TFT-LCD screen tilts forward for more ergonomic use on the new model.
Microsoft Office applications are included for mobile productivity including Outlook Mobile, Word Mobile, Excel Mobile and PowerPoint Mobile. In addition to the 3.5G HSDPA and UMTS service, the TyTN II also has GSM, GPRS, EDGE, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. It also packs an integrated GPS receiver as well.
Another area of improvement over the first generation TyTN is in the camera on the new phone. The original TyTN had a 2.1 megapixel webcam while the new TyTN II has a 3.0 megapixel camera with auto focus. The new version also has a faster Qualcomm MSM 7200 processor running at 400 MHz.
HTC installs Windows Mobile 6 Professional on the TyTN II. The new TyTN II also features 256MB of ROM and 128MB of RAM. Extra storage is available via a microSD expansion slot.
Power for the new TyTN II comes from a 1350 mAh Li-polymer battery with up to 350 hours of standby time in UMTS and 365 hours standby in GSM. HTC rates talk time up to 264 minutes for UMTS, 420 minutes for GSM and up to 120 minutes for video calling.
Other notable features of the TyTN II include an external HTC ExtUSB connector for USB and audio functions and a GPS antenna connector. Overall dimensions of the phone are 112mm L x 59mm W x 19mm D and it weighs 190g with the battery.
